This is the final procedure in breast reconstruction. Typically 3-6 months after nipple reconstruction, the pigmented area can be created by medical tattooing. It is a simple outpatient procedure which can be done in most patients without local anaesthetic. Different pigments are mixed together and then tattooed in by using a sterile system. The colour match can be quite difficult especially in patients with a lighter coloured opposite nipple. It is considerably easier to do a bilateral nipple tattoo as similar colours can be better created on both sides.
Medical Tattoos are done under sterile precautions, but can fade with time.
Occasionally repeat tattooing may be necessary in the longer term.
